In Five Years

Where do you see yourself in five years?

It’s kind of impassive to say I haven’t been reading much over the past few months. When COVID hit I thought this is it, this is the year I’m going to read waaayyyy over my Goodreads goal and excel in finding new novels. Long story short, that was not the case. I think I’ve barely read 15 full novels in the past 10 months. I keep starting books and never finishing them. That’s insane to me. I have never been in this type of reading slump, but I’m honestly not mad about it. I do, however, hope that changes soon.
It’s taken me well over a month to finish this beaut, but I did it and I have to talk about it.

This novel follows Dannie, a successful lawyer through five important years in her life. She’s engaged to her dream man, thriving in her dream job and all in all having a pretty exceptional hand in the real world. That is until the night of her engagement when she falls asleep and sees a small sliver of how her life looks five years from that day. She’s in bed with a new man, in a new city, being a completely different person than she knows how to be. What’s bizarre about this? Dannie looks… happy. As Dannie tries running away from the countdown, she’s left with a tragedy that leads her to the exact place she’s been avoiding to go.

I highly enjoyed this novel. I ended up buying it as an audiobook to keep myself intrigued, but once I got halfway into the novel and everything started to unfold, I couldn’t stop listening! This book deals with cancer. It’s terrible, but it’s real and it’s life changing. We watch this character that doesn’t express much emotion develop into a true heroine. Yeah, the circumstances suck but I think it’s a friendly reminder that it’s okay to not be okay. We get suck in these routines. Cycles that seem never ending. We forget that we have to venture out of our comfort zones to be able to grow as a person. Sometimes we forget that we are not in control and we take for granted the people that surround us. This book isn't a "let's live in the moment" type of book. It's more of "why didn't I live in that moment," type of book. We can't change how our own books are being written, but we can change the type of person we are. It's okay to love hard and to love fiercely. People like people who aren't afraid to wear their emotions on their sleeve. I know I do.
